Summary

  • Microsoft made over 20 purpose-built legal skills generally available inside Copilot on October 15, 2026.
  • Capabilities build on the earlier Legal Agent and now ship alongside partner add-ins from Harvey, Docusign and Bloomberg Law.
  • Contract review and tracked changes move into Word itself, removing the need for separate legal AI tools.

The latest

More than 20 purpose-built legal skills went generally available to Microsoft Copilot customers worldwide on October 15, 2026, alongside new partner-built add-ins. Microsoft said the capabilities extend beyond text prompts into deeper document work in Word, multi-file and multi-step tasks in Cowork, and connections to trusted legal systems and sources. The company said lawyers remain accountable for final decisions.

Details

  • The five outcome areas: Microsoft grouped the skills into drafting from approved precedents and templates, review and negotiation, obligation and deadline tracking, turning research into guidance by comparing authorities and spotting gaps, and moving matters forward by building timelines, key dates, open questions and formal decisions from meeting records.
  • Inside Word: According to Microsoft, Copilot determines how a clause should change and Word applies it as a native tracked change while preserving formatting. Drafting draws on approved precedents stored in SharePoint and inserts native content controls as editable placeholders, with suggested edits applied only after user approval.
  • Coming to preview: Microsoft said a new Word experience for navigating between defined terms and their definitions reaches preview later this month. The company did not give a specific date for that release.
  • Cowork and Work IQ: The company said Cowork handles multi-step tasks across agreements, email, meetings and files, including tracking obligations across contract portfolios, comparing key terms and building case timelines. Work IQ connects Copilot and agents to an organization's knowledge, context and people in real time.
  • Partner add-ins: Legal research partners include Bloomberg Law, Trellis, Descrybe Legal Engine, Legal Data Hunter, Courtroom5 and Lawstronaut. Document, matter and deal management brings iManage Work, NetDocuments, Box, Litera, Thomson Reuters HighQ, LegalZoom and Solve Intelligence.
  • Agreements and specialized AI: Signature and agreement partners are Docusign, Juro, Adobe Acrobat Sign, LawVu, SignatureAPI, Dropbox Sign and PandaDoc. Specialized legal AI covers Harvey, Legora and DeepJudge, while eDiscovery and legal intelligence add Everlaw and Relativity.
  • The usage numbers: Microsoft reported that since the Frontier release in April, more than 1,800 users generated about 100,000 edits and kept roughly 7 of every 10 suggestions. Internal evaluations scored fluency above 90%, conciseness above 95% and appropriateness above 85%.
  • Customer adoption: Matt Simpkin, chief information officer at Clyde & Co, said the firm has deployed Copilot broadly with adoption "approaching 90%". Gunilla Schots-Fischer, senior legal counsel at Uniper Global Commodities SE, said she valued testing Legal Agent through the Compass Programme.
  • Security and data: Microsoft said prompts and responses are processed within the Microsoft 365 service boundary with enterprise data protection, that Copilot acts only on content the user can already access, respects sensitivity labels, and that prompts, responses and documents are not used to train foundation models.
  • Licensing unstated: The announcement set out availability but did not specify required license tiers or pricing for the legal capabilities or the partner add-ins.

Background

The new skills build on Legal Agent, which Microsoft introduced earlier and has now folded into Copilot as legal add-ins rather than a standalone product.

Between the lines

The design choice matters more than the feature list: by having Word apply edits as native tracked changes and by keeping processing inside the Microsoft 365 boundary, Microsoft positions Copilot where corporate legal teams already work rather than asking them to adopt a separate tool. Including Harvey, Legora and DeepJudge as add-ins turns specialized legal AI vendors into components of that surface.

What's next

Microsoft has scheduled a Microsoft Copilot in Word session on October 22 through the Microsoft Discovery Sessions catalog. More partner add-ins are due through the Microsoft add-in registry, and the defined-terms Word experience reaches preview this month.
