Summary

  • Walmart will let AI shopping agents place orders inside customer accounts, with per-purchase approval or preset spending limits.
  • The retailer named Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini among conversational commerce integrations, alongside its own assistant Sparky.
  • It is the first mass-market framework turning agents from search tools into authorized buyers with customer-set permissions.

The latest

AI agents will be able to complete purchases on Walmart customers' behalf within limits the customer sets, under a framework the retailer published on October 21, 2026. Walmart said it is introducing Agent Profiles, a Walmart Agent Gateway and a dedicated set of Terms for AI Agents, with the profiles due in the next month and the gateway opening as a pilot for businesses and developers.

Details

  • The profiles: Each AI agent gets its own profile inside the customer's Walmart account, so agent purchases appear separately from the customer's own. Walmart said the profile is created automatically the first time a customer shops with an agent through the gateway, and the customer links it to their Walmart login.
  • The spending controls: Customers choose between approving every purchase individually or letting the agent buy within a spending cap they define. The examples Walmart cited are 50, 100 and 200 dollars. Limits can be changed at any time, and the customer can review every agent's purchases or delete a profile outright.
  • On pricing: Agents see the same prices human shoppers see, according to Walmart, and promotions and fees are displayed before a purchase is completed. The company framed that parity as part of keeping the customer in control of what is being bought and at what cost.
  • The gateway: Walmart described the Agent Gateway as a faster and more reliable route than having an agent browse the website, which it said can be slow and error-prone. It is built on MCP and opens to businesses and developers through walmart.com/agents, with no launch date announced.
  • Data limits: The gateway lets an agent buy a customer's usual items — Walmart's examples were sourdough bread and a specific milk brand — without exposing the broader purchase history. The company said agents only reach information the task requires and the customer permits, stating: "Only Walmart sees this."
  • Payment restrictions: Agents never receive payment card details and cannot add or change payment methods, under the published terms. Walmart said agents must not act beyond the shopper's intent, and that it may require additional approval even for purchases that fall inside an authorized spending limit.
  • Returns and enforcement: Walmart's standard returns process applies even if an agent does not behave as intended, the company said. Agents that violate the terms are blocked from the Walmart site. The agent's own privacy policy governs what it receives, while Walmart handles what the agent submits under its privacy notice.
  • The partners: Walmart named Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini among its conversational commerce integrations, referring to others without identifying them, alongside its in-house assistant Sparky. No executives were quoted and no spokespeople were named in the announcement.

Between the lines

Two design choices carry the weight here. Walmart withholds card data and purchase history from agents while keeping the account relationship, the pricing and the returns liability on its own side — the agent executes, the retailer still owns the customer. The spending cap, meanwhile, converts a trust problem into a number the shopper sets, which is what makes default authorization commercially viable at all.

What's next

Agent Profiles are due within the month, Walmart said. Watch when the Agent Gateway pilot opens to developers at walmart.com/agents, and whether rival retailers publish comparable agent terms on payment data and spending authorization.
